Good News and Better News from the Gallup Poll

The good news first: Both Obama and Clinton hold an identical small lead over John “Old Man Flip-Flop” McCain, 46% to 44% according to the latest Gallup poll.

The better news: Obama now leads Clinton by 11%, which is the largest lead he has enjoyed this year. This survey was conducted after Obama made a reasonable comment, and Clinton and McCain joined forces to chastise him for making the assumption that Americans are not as stupid as lobbyists and demagogues would care to believe.

I find this news to be both heartening and disturbing. The fact that Obama can speak with the level of candor he has so far enjoyed and be not only understood by embraced by a wide variety of Americans goes to show that we’re not as bad as some of us are lead to believe.

But the Clinton Demolition Derby bothers me. Arianna Huffington wrote yesterday:

It’s your candidate, Hillary Clinton, adopting the frames, lies, stereotypes and destructive clichés long embraced by the likes of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. She has clearly decided that the road to victory runs through scorched earth.

It is as if Clinton has decided that if she won’t be the next president, no Democrat will either, and she has essentially decided to take potshots at Obama to ensure this. To watch her spout of the rhetoric of the right wing is kind of chilling.

I just hope she either comes her senses, or someone (clearly Bill won’t be much help) holds a mirror up to her, and lets her see what she’s become.
