The position of the President of the United States is one regularly described as the most powerful in the world. It has been at least suggested, if not widely considered as common knowledge, that in the current administration the President is far from the person in charge.
Vice-President Dick Cheney, who it must be remembered was chosen to run as Vice-President by the head of Bush’s vice-presidential selection committee…which was…Dick Cheney, has wielded far more power than any VP in history, operating primarily in the shadows, hidden by the walls of secrecy and what he creatively describes as executive privilege.
But what Cheney does is nearly in full public view compared to former Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief Strategist Karl Rove has done. His list of accomplishments is long and varied, and mostly a matter of some dispute. Generally, his fingerprints can be seen on a number of political incidents and scandals, but he himself remains just off to the side.
It is the view of the Elitist that Rove is able to pull such tricks as push polling about John McCain’s supposed illegitimate black child in the 2000 South Carolina primaries (and please note that Rove is currently working on the McCain campaign), the political dismissal of US Attorneys, and the outing of Valerie Plame as a CIA agent due to the fact that he receives relatively little media scrutiny. Every so often the media will ask what Rove is up to, but no one seems to keep a steady eye on him.
The Elitist would like to do so. Please check back soon for the RoveWatch, a continuously updating newsfeed about the activities of Karl Rove as well as commentary and analysis. It is time that people begin to pay attention to what really is going on behind the scenes.
And in case you’d like to know what is going on with Rove today, please check out the following from the Associated Press:
House committee asks Rove to testify about ex-Ala. governor
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday asked former White House adviser Karl Rove to testify about claims that he influenced a federal corruption case against former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama.
The panel also called on the Justice Department’s inspector general to investigate allegations that political motivations drove the Siegelman case and several other federal prosecutions during the Bush administration.
Issuing a lengthy report on possible “selective prosecution,” the committee cited cases against Pennsylvania coroner Cyril Wecht and Wisconsin state procurement official Georgia Thompson as other examples that are ripe for review.
